Internship | Integrated Gas Hub for LNG & CO2

Due to climate change there is a big urgency to reduce carbon emissions and decarbonize our processes and use of energy. Many industrial companies rely on the imports of fossil fuels as feedstock or energy source, such as LNG, for their processes and produce CO2 emissions. Due to the carbon reduction efforts these industrial companies are looking for ways to capture and permanently store this CO2 in depleted natural gas fields. If there are no such depleted fields in the
area the captured CO2 can be transported to areas with sufficient capacity available using ships. To make this transport efficient the CO2 is liquefied before it is stored in the ship, similar to how LPG is transported today. The disadvantage of CO2 liquefaction is the high energy consumption to cool it down and pressurize it.

The idea in the Integrated Gas Hub is to combine the process of LNG regasification and CO2 liquefaction to increase the energy efficiency of both processes. If LNG is imported for the purpose of feeding it into the natural gas grid it has to be regasified. For this regasification a lot of heat is required that in typical LNG import terminals is supplied by a heat source such as seawater. However, this “cold energy” could also be used for other purposes such as CO2 liquefaction.

Internship objective:

The primary objective of this internship assignment is to investigate and evaluate the feasibility of integrating LNG regasification with the liquefaction of CO2. The aim is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the technical aspects, challenges, design and techno-economics of the concept. You’ll be shaping your own research assignment but activities will be at the least:

  • Literature review and market research

  • Design and modeling of the concept in Aspen HYSYS (or similar software tool)

  • Interacting with equipment manufacturers

  • Techno-economic analysis of your design

  • Report all findings

What can we offer:

For this internship you’ll be part of the Projects & Technology team of the Vopak New Energies & LNG division based at the Vopak HQ office in Rotterdam. In this team you’ll have the opportunity to learn from seasoned engineers that have lots of experience in LNG, whilst at the same time get familiar with new technology in all energy transition projects that Vopak is working on in the space of CCS, Hydrogen, Renewable feedstocks and Flow batteries. Next to this learning experience you’ll get a competitive internship allowance and associated benefits for Vopak employees. For more information about Vopak please visit www.vopak.com

Requirements:

  • You are a Master student in Heat transfer, Process Technology or related topics,

  • You are living in the Netherlands and available for a period of 3-5 months as from September 2023

  • You will remain enrolled in a Dutch University during your internship period

Interested?

We would like to hear from you.
